New England Hardscapes has been providing decorative concrete to residents and businesses throughout Massachusetts as well as New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Maine and Vermont for over four years. In 2006, they saw a rise in the outdoor living projects which had them designing everything from pools, to patios, to retaining walls, to fire pits, to walkways, and to driveways.

"This year we focused on collaborating with architects and landscape architects for residential work, as well as driveways, walkways, etc.," says Capachione, adding that the transition from pool decks, which in 2005 was the bulk of their portfolio, to complete outdoor living areas done in decorative concrete, was a smooth one.

One of their recent and most outstanding projects includes a 2,800-square-foot stamped and textured outdoor living space created for a residence in Newport, Rhode Island, right on the water.

"We were contacted by the landscape architect, and I was able to up-sell them to one of our unique surfaces," Capachione explains.

After the landscape architect drew up the plans, New England Hardscapes created the hand cut flagstone pattern and implemented control joints into it, then grouted the whole thing. They used a water-based stain for the color, and each "stone" was stained by hand, which took a whole crew a couple of days to complete. They added color hardeners to produce highlights, and then more stain for the decorative banding.

They also constructed the outdoor kitchen with stone, before creating 400 square feet of concrete countertops. The tops were poured in place and colored to match the edging of the pool, then each top was polished.
