CONCRETE POOL DECK REPLICATES TRAVERTINE

With the average cost for installing travertine pavers ranging from $12 to more than $18 per square foot, this high-end material exceeds the budget of most homeowners, especially for a large area. These homeowners in Mendota Heights, Minn., were able to give their expansive 6,000-square-foot pool deck the upscale look of travertine at a much lower price tag by replacing it with poured-in-place concrete.

“The entire deck was given a travertine texture and then cut into 2x2-foot squares to mimic travertine tiles. The realistic color variations of travertine were achieved by applying a white dust-on color hardener with a color wash for accenting,” says contractor Steve Bulach, co-owner of Bulach Custom Rock, Inver Grove Heights, Minn.

The project also involved placing a new concrete sidewalk and cantilevered steps leading to the home’s front entryway. The step edges were formed with a custom rock-face step liner to complement the entryway’s magnificent stone pillars. Both the sidewalk and steps were given a slate-textured finish and colored to match the stone.

“The textured look is simple, yet classy,” says Bulach. “In our northern climate, it also appeals to homeowners because it is easier to clean and maintain.”
